Community - The toddler aged child, 18 months - 3 years, has the opportunity to experience a community, not just in the family, but in a group environment that is created to satisfy their unique needs. Our Toddler Community is based on the guiding principles of our school - respect for oneself, respect for others and respect for the environment. We foster these by meeting the students' need for nurturing in our indoor and outdoor environments which provide stimulating and challenging activities in the following areas:
Independence - "I want to do it myself". Students are given many opportunities to develop personal care skills including feeding, dressing, hand washing, brushing hair and toilet learning when they are ready.
Coordination of Movement - "I want to do purposeful activities". Through practice and repetition with fine motor and large motor activities of choice, the young student becomes more and more competent resulting in development of self-confidence and self-esteem.
Language - "I want to express myself". A language-rich environment where self expression is encouraged and a variety of language materials are provided. A comfortable place where students can sit and look at books is available. Daily music, rhythm and movement experiences are also an important part of our curriculum.
Sense of Order - "I want routines and I want to know what to expect". This helps the student to build trust in their world and trust in themselves. The adults carefully prepare the environment so that everything has a place and we encourage the students to return the materials where they belong.
Social Development - "I want to be with others". Beginning social skills are fostered: cooperating together, boundaries with others, and taking turns.
The toddler program at MCHD is focused on supporting the toddler-aged student's individual personality and interests to emerge naturally in a safe, supportive and respectful environment. The main goals of the toddler program include:
Acquisition of language
Development of social skills (grace & courtesy)
Introduction to new experiences and concepts
Nurturing the children's inate joy for learning
The toddler classrooms are intentional communities created to provide a solid foundation for each student's educational and social journey. The toddler program achieves our school's vision statement by fostering independence, coordination of movement, language, sense of order and social development.
